Do I Need a Memo to Deposit TON to Binance? Common Pitfalls Explained

TON (The Open Network), originally designed by the Telegram team and now maintained by the community, is a high-performance public blockchain. Binance supports deposits for the TON mainnet token and Jetton-class assets (including USDT on TON). However, the biggest difference between TON deposits and other chains is that a Memo (Remark) is mandatory—funds sent with a missing or incorrect Memo are highly likely to be unrecoverable. This guide explains how to avoid these common pitfalls. Account preparation: Register via the Binance official website and complete KYC. For the mobile experience, use the Binance official app; for iOS, refer to the iOS installation tutorial.

1. Why TON Deposits Require a Memo

The operational model of the TON blockchain differs from typical wallets. While each wallet is a smart contract account, exchanges use a single shared deposit address for all users to save on address management. They rely on the Memo (also called a Remark or Comment) to distinguish between individual accounts.

This logic is identical to that used by EOS, XRP, and XLM. When you transfer funds to a Binance TON address:

  • On-chain Address: Identical for all users.
  • Memo: Your unique numerical string that identifies your specific account.

Omitting the Memo is like putting money into Binance's "lost and found" bin without any identification. Whether you can recover it depends on Binance's support capacity, but it is extremely tedious and not guaranteed to succeed.

2. Finding Your Memo on Binance

  1. Navigate to Wallet → Deposit → Select TON or USDT.
  2. If depositing USDT, select TON as the network.
  3. The deposit page will display two critical fields:
    • Deposit Address: A TON address starting with "EQ" or "UQ".
    • MEMO (also known as a Tag): A string of digits.

Copy both. Provide the Address to the sender's "Address" field and the Memo to the "Remark/Comment" field.

3. How to Fill the Memo on the Sending Side

Different wallets and exchanges use different names for the Memo field:

Platform Memo Field Name
Tonkeeper Comment
OKX TON Wallet Memo
Tonhub Comment
OKX Exchange Withdrawal Memo
Bybit Exchange Withdrawal Tag
Huobi Withdrawal Memo

When filling it in, enter only the numbers provided by Binance. Do not add any text (e.g., do not write "Binance", "deposit", etc.).

4. What Happens if the Memo is Incorrect?

There are several scenarios:

1. Memo Left Blank: Binance will attempt to match the transaction according to their rules, but it will likely end up in the "uncredited" queue. After submitting a support ticket, Binance usually takes 7–15 business days to reach a conclusion. The recovery rate is roughly 50–70% and requires full on-chain proof.

2. Memo Belongs to Someone Else: The funds will be credited to another user's account. While you can theoretically contact Binance to adjust the balance, it requires the cooperation of the unintended recipient. The timing and success rate are unpredictable.

3. Memo Off by One Digit: Similar to scenario 2, the funds enter another person's account, and the resolution process is the same.

4. Memo Contains Non-numeric Content: Binance's system will fail to recognize it, treating it as a missing Memo (Scenario 1).

Conclusion: Always copy and paste; never type the Memo manually.

5. Which USDT Version is on TON?

USDT on TON is a Jetton asset issued directly by Tether (not a bridged version), with the contract controlled by Tether. Binance supports this native USDT (Jetton). If you are sending from the @wallet within Telegram, it uses the native version, so there are no issues.

6. Binance Deposit Confirmation and Timing

Asset Min Deposit Confirmations Typical Arrival Time
TON 0.05 1 30s – 1 min
USDT (TON) 1 1 30s – 1 min

The TON network is very fast, and deposits are almost instantaneous—provided the Memo is correct.

7. Sending from Telegram @wallet to Binance

Many users deposit funds from the built-in Telegram @wallet. Here is the process:

  1. Open @wallet in Telegram → Send → Select TON or USDT.
  2. Paste your Binance deposit address (starting with EQ or UQ).
  3. Paste the Binance Memo (numbers only) into the Comment field.
  4. Confirm the amount and send.

Note: The "Send" button in @wallet initiates an on-chain transfer to the public Binance address + Memo. If you select "send to user" or "send via Telegram," it is an internal @wallet transfer that will not be recorded on the blockchain, and Binance will not receive it.

8. Withdrawing to the TON Network

When withdrawing from Binance to an external TON wallet:

  1. Wallet → Withdraw → TON/USDT.
  2. Select TON as the network.
  3. Paste the recipient's TON address.
  4. If the recipient is a personal wallet (Tonkeeper, Tonhub, OKX Web3), a Memo is usually not required; you can leave it blank.
  5. If the recipient is another exchange, you MUST provide the Memo provided by that exchange.

When withdrawing to a personal wallet from Binance, the Memo is optional. When withdrawing to an exchange, it is mandatory.

9. What to Do if You Made a Memo Error

If you realize the Memo was wrong after sending the transaction:

  1. Immediately save the Transaction Hash (TXID) from a TON Explorer.
  2. Take a screenshot of the transfer record from the sending platform.
  3. Submit a ticket to Binance: Support → Account/Asset Issues → Deposit Issues. Attach the TXID, sender address, asset type, network, the incorrect Memo used, and the correct Memo intended.
  4. Wait patiently for 7–15 business days.

Do not continue sending funds to the same address during this period to avoid complicating the support process.

TON is a great network, but the Memo mechanism can be unintuitive. Cultivate the "copy address → copy Memo → paste twice" habit to ensure your funds arrive safely.
