Cardano (ADA) Deposit to Binance: UTXO Model & Address Formats Explained

Cardano (with its native token ADA) is a public blockchain that takes a different path from both Bitcoin and Ethereum: it utilizes the Extended UTXO (eUTXO) model combined with a Proof-of-Stake (Ouroboros) consensus mechanism. This architecture introduces some unique details for deposits and withdrawals: there are multiple address formats, whether a Memo (Stake Address) is required can be confusing, and the confirmation algorithm differs from other chains. This article explains everything you need to know about depositing ADA to Binance. Account preparation: For registration, please use the official Binance entry; for the app, use the official Binance App. iPhone users can refer to the iOS installation guide.

1. Cardano Network Basics

Consensus and Speed

  • Proof-of-Stake Ouroboros: Validators are randomly selected.
  • Block time is approximately 20 seconds.
  • Confirmations can be slightly slower when blocks are fully loaded.
  • A full confirmation (irreversible) requires 15 blocks (about 5 minutes).
  • Binance generally requires 15 confirmations for the deposit to arrive.

Network Fees

ADA transfer fees use a fixed algorithm: about 0.16-0.2 ADA per transaction (around 0.1 USD at current prices). This fee is extremely low and predictable.

2. Address Formats and UTXO Model

Three Types of Addresses

Cardano has multiple address types, which can easily confuse beginners:

TypePrefixUse Case
Base Address (Shelley)addr1...Standard sending and receiving, contains stake info (most common)
Enterprise Addressaddr1...Does not contain stake info (rarely used)
Stake Addressstake1...Only used for staking management (cannot send/receive ADA)
Byron LegacyAe2... / DdzFF...Legacy address (deprecated)

The Binance deposit address is a Shelley Base Address (starts with addr1, length is over 100 characters).

Brief Overview of the eUTXO Model

Unlike Ethereum's "account balance" model, Cardano uses a UTXO model:

  • Each transaction consumes several "Unspent Transaction Outputs" (UTXOs) and generates new UTXOs.
  • Your balance is the sum of all your UTXOs.
  • Transfers may result in change being returned.
  • It supports native tokens (you can issue tokens without smart contracts).

3. Steps to Deposit ADA to Binance

  1. On the App or website, select "Deposit" → search for ADA.
  2. Select Cardano (also known as the ADA network) for the network.
  3. Copy the address starting with addr1.
  4. No Memo is required (Important: ADA is not like XRP/EOS chains that require a Memo).
  5. Send ADA from a wallet like Yoroi, Daedalus, Eternl, or Lace.
  6. The transaction fee is about 0.17 ADA.
  7. It will arrive after 15 block confirmations, taking about 5 minutes.

Recommended Wallets

  • Yoroi: A light wallet, available on browser/mobile.
  • Eternl (formerly ccvault): Feature-rich, supports dApps.
  • Daedalus: The official full-node wallet, secure but resource-intensive.
  • Lace: IOG's official new light wallet, offering a modern experience.
  • Ledger Hardware Wallet: Can be connected via Yoroi/Eternl/Lace.

4. Common Misconceptions About Memos

Many beginners worry they missed something when they don't see a Memo field on the ADA deposit page. To clarify:

  • Depositing or withdrawing Cardano ADA on Binance does NOT require a Memo.
  • The Stake Address (stake1) is used for staking management, it is not a Memo.
  • Do not enter stake1... as the deposit address or Memo.

Chains that require a Memo: XRP, EOS, Stellar, TON, ATOM, etc. Chains that do not require a Memo: BTC, ETH, ADA, AVAX, SOL (in most cases), etc.

5. Withdrawing ADA to a Cardano Wallet

Steps

  1. Go to Binance Withdrawal → ADA.
  2. The network defaults to Cardano.
  3. Enter your address starting with addr1.
  4. Enter the amount (minimum 4 ADA, because Cardano has a minimum UTXO requirement of ~1 ADA).
  5. The fee is 0.8 ADA (a flat network fee charged by Binance).
  6. It arrives in about 5 minutes.

Minimum Amount

The Cardano protocol dictates that each UTXO must contain at least about 1 ADA (minUTXOValue), which means the withdrawal amount cannot be too small. Binance typically sets the minimum withdrawal amount at 4 ADA.

6. Tokens and USDT on Cardano

Native Tokens

Cardano supports native tokens (without relying on smart contracts). Common ones include:

  • DJED: Algorithmic stablecoin (issued by COTI).
  • iUSD: Indigo Protocol synthetic stablecoin.
  • WMT (World Mobile Token).
  • MIN, SUNDAE, and other DEX governance tokens.

However, Binance currently does not support USDT on the Cardano chain—Tether has not issued native USDT on Cardano. If you want to deposit or withdraw USDT on Binance, please use other chains like TRC20, ERC20, BEP20, or Solana.

Note the Difference

CIP-25 standard NFTs also run on Cardano, but this is a separate matter from ADA deposits and withdrawals.

7. Staking Yields (Supplementary Info)

ADA held in a wallet automatically participates in staking, but once deposited to Binance, it becomes custody by Binance:

  • Wallet holding yields about 3-4% APY.
  • Binance "Simple Earn ADA" yields 1-3% APY.
  • Staked ADA can still be transferred out at any time (no lock-up).
  • Wallet staking requires delegating to a Stake Pool.

If you are just trading short-term, there's no need to worry about staking differences. For long-term holding, self-custody wallets offer higher yields.

8. Common Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Using a Legacy Byron Address as a Deposit Address

Early Daedalus wallets generated Byron addresses by default (starting with Ae2 or Ddz). While these addresses can receive ADA, do not use them for Binance deposits—always try to use Shelley addresses starting with addr1. Transferring from Byron to Binance usually works, but the reverse (Binance withdrawing to Byron) will fail in some cases.

Pitfall 2: Selecting the Wrong Network (ERC20 ADA)

ADA used to have a wrapped token on Ethereum (CardanoADA or wADA), encapsulated at the contract level. Binance does not accept this wrapped version. You must use the native Cardano network.

Pitfall 3: Waiting 30 Minutes After Deposit Without Arrival

Cardano blocks are produced every 20 seconds, and 15 confirmations take about 5 minutes. If it hasn't arrived after 15 minutes, it could be that:

  • The transaction is still queuing in the mempool.
  • Insufficient balance (change failure).
  • Check the status using the TXID on Cardanoscan.io.

Pitfall 4: Hardware Wallet Signature Failure

Older Ledger Nano S (256KB Flash version) devices easily run out of memory when running the Cardano app. It is recommended to use the Ledger Nano S Plus or Nano X.

9. FAQ

Q1: Do I need a Memo to deposit ADA to Binance? No. Cardano is an account-level UTXO chain and does not need Memos to distinguish users.

Q2: Can I deposit USDT to Binance via Cardano? No. There is no native USDT on Cardano.

Q3: What's the difference between addr and stake addresses? addr is used for sending and receiving funds, while stake is used for staking management (it cannot directly send or receive ADA). Binance requires the addr.

Q4: Is the 0.8 ADA fee too expensive for withdrawing 4 ADA from Binance? The Binance fee is fixed (not proportional to the amount), so withdrawing large amounts is more cost-effective. For small amounts, it is recommended to batch them.

Q5: Which Cardano block explorer should I use? Cardanoscan.io or Pool.pm; the former is more professional.

10. Further Reading

Summary: Depositing Cardano to Binance requires no Memo, uses the addr1 Shelley format for the address, and takes about 5 minutes for confirmation. The eUTXO model is transparent to regular users, so simply following the tutorial will suffice. If you are holding large amounts of ADA, it is recommended to self-custody for higher staking returns.
